I was checking up on the Bemidji Pioneer Sports Twitter account tonight and found out something interesting.
Tony Hawk, the most prominent figure in skateboarding, is advocating for the Bemidji Skate Park.
Fundraising for the project is continuing, Pioneer city reporter Bethany Wesley wrote on her Bemidji Beat blog Monday. The project is seeking to earn a $25,000 grant through Pepsi, which would become possible if enough votes through refresheverything.com.
Supporters of the project have raised $315,000 and need another $135,000 to complete it. Once complete, it would be the first public custom concrete skate park in Minnesota.
Okay, on to the Tony Hawk item:
"testing the power of Twitter… vote for Bemidji skatepark project to win 25k from Pepsi: http://www.refresheverything.com/BemidjiSkatePark," Hawk tweeted late Monday night.
Hawk’s Twitter feed has over 2 million followers, so his support bodes well for the Skate Park’s chances in the Pepsi vote contest.
Over 10 years later, his 900 trick (two and half spins) at the X Games is still an amazing moment. I don’t remember really paying any attention to the X Games until Hawk became the first person in history to pull off the 900.
