The Bemidji State women’s hockey team scored three goals in the second period to defeat St. Cloud State 5-2 Saturday afternoon and sweep the weekend series at the Sanford Center.

Marlee Wheelhouse, Abby Williams and Erika Wheelhouse scored the second period goals. Tess Dusik and Sadie Lundquist also had goals for the Beavers.

“It was really key that we get these points this weekend and I told our players I wasn’t happy after the first period,” BSU head coach Steve Sertich said. “It wasn’t a pretty game on our part but sometimes you have to win ugly too.”

BSU goalie Alana McElhinney finished with 23 saves for her second win of the season. She gave up a first period goal to Molli Mott and a third period goal to Haylea Schmid. St. Cloud State freshman goalie Julie Friend had 34 saves.

The Beavers (5-1-2, 2-1-1-1 WCHA) remain at home next weekend to face No. 2 Minnesota. Game times are 7:07 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Sanford Center. BSU will enter the series on a four-game winning streak.

“I think we’re playing really well as a team and we’re really clicking out there,” Abby Williams said. “Everyone’s contributing whether it’s scoring or on the defensive end. Everyone’s playing with jump and hopefully we can carry it into next weekend.”

St. Cloud State (1-7-0, 0-6-0 WCHA) was more competitive compared to Friday’s 8-1 loss to BSU and took an 1-0 lead on Mott’s power play goal halfway though the first period. Dusik scored her fourth goal of the year with 1:37 left in the period to tie the game 1-1.

Marlee Wheelhouse punched in a rebound on the power play 4:23 into the second period at the edge of the net. Williams’ shot from the top of the circle deflected off a stick to beat Friend 24 seconds later and Erika Wheelhouse’s scored on a rebound at 10:20. Both Wheelhouse goals held up under video review.

“They were kind of lucky and all scrum goals,” Lundquist said. “Our defense and power play put them in, so you really can’t ask for more than that.”

SCSU pressed in the third period when Schmid scored and two shots in the final minutes hit the post.

Lundquist, who had two goals and five assists in the sweep, iced the game for BSU with 4:33 left to play with the last goal. Her shot from behind the goal line bounced off Friend’s back into the net.
