MADISON, Wis. — Bemidji State freshman goalie Andrew Walsh was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Walsh had 36 saves in Bemidji State’s 2-1 victory over then No. 13 Denver last Saturday at the Sanford Center. It was Bemidji State’s first win in program history over the Pioneers, which includes eight games in the Division I era dating back to 1999-2000.
His 36 saves on 37 shots resulted in a .973 save percentage and he was part of a penalty kill that held the Pioneers scoreless on all six power-play opportunities.
The award marks the second time this season Walsh has received a WCHA honor. The Dawson Creek, British Columbia native was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26.
Walsh is 3-2-1 this season with a team-best 2.69 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
Alaska-Anchorage forward Mitch Bruijsten and Minnesota defenseman Mark Alt were named WCHA Co-Offensive Players of the Week. North Dakota goalie Aaron Dell was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.
Bemidji State (7-9-2, 6-7-2 WCHA) hosts Alabama-Huntsville (1-17-1) this weekend in a non-conference series. Game times are Friday 7:37 p.m. and Saturday 7:07 p.m. at the Sanford Center.
Fontaine, former BSU goalie Alamano, Shanahan win big screen televisions with center-ice shots at BSU-Denver series
Christmas came a little early for three contestants during the first period intermission contest at last weekend’s Bemidji State-Denver series.
During the first intermission of Bemidji State men’s hockey games, the ‘Hockey Hot Shots’ promotion sponsored by Paul Bunyan Communications and Naylor’s awards a 46-inch flat screen television to contestants who can make a shot from the red line through a small opening at the goal.
There were three out of six contestants during last weekend’s series against Denver to make the shot: Kraig Fontaine of Bagley, former BSU goalie Orlando Alamano of Bemidji and Ben Shanahan of Bemidji.
