The New York Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in the NHL Winter Classic outdoor game Monday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Former Bemidji State hockey player Matt Read played 20 shifts for a total of 16 minutes and 56 seconds in the game. He had one shot on net, two checks and was on the ice when Mike Rupp scored the first goal for the Rangers.

Bemidji State was mentioned 90 seconds into NBC’s national television broadcast by play-by-play announcer Doc Emrick when Read played the puck at center ice.

Read, Bemidji State’s 2010-11 team captain, ranks fourth in NHL rookie scoring with 22 points. His 12 goals this season are one behind rookie goals leader Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Edmonton.
