Bemidji State senior goalie Dan Bakala will start in net for the Beavers tonight. He will be making his first start since the 2-1 New Year’s Eve win over Bowling Green. The 3-2 loss to Denver on Dec. 9 was Bakala’s last start prior to that game.
Denver will be playing without Drew Shore tonight, who is out with what is being called a lower-body injury. He had two goals and three assists in Denver’s 6-3 win over BSU Friday night.
Here’s a couple of items from my conversation with BSU head coach Tom Serratore that did not make it into last night’s game story.
Serratore on BSU’s approach heading into the third period trailing 5-2:
“You’ve got to get keep your foot on the gas pedal and you have to get your defensemen involved in the play. It’s risk-reward hockey at that particular time. They’re going to win by four or five goals or we’re going to try and tighten it up and make it a hockey game. That’s what you’re trying to do because Denver is a team that once you get the puck in the zone, they’re going to chip it right back out. They’re very patient, they’re very structured and they’re just very good defensively.”
Serratore on if he thought about pulling goalie Andrew Walsh after the second period:
“I did (think about it), but I wanted to ride him and see how he responded. I just felt it was a situation where being a freshman goalie I wanted him to ride it out. It was definitely the right thing to do. He’s got to learn how to play from behind and to me it’s a great game for experience for a freshman.”
