The losing streak for the Bemidji State women’s hockey team stretched to four games with a 1-0 loss to No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center.

UMD’s Jenna McParland scored the game’s only goal four minutes into the second period and the Bulldogs held on to extend BSU’s winless streak to seven games. UMD goalie Jennifer Harss and BSU goalie Zuzana Tomcikova each had 25 saves.

“We don’t like losing and especially here at the end of the season, this isn’t where we want to be,” BSU captain Marlee Wheelhouse said. We want to be winning games and getting points going in to the playoffs. ”

BSU has three games left in the regular season before the WCHA playoffs start. The Beavers (14-15-3, 8-15-2 WCHA) and Bulldogs (16-12-1, 13-11-1 WCHA) conclude the series Saturday afternoon at the Sanford Center at 2:07 p.m.

Lack of offense continued to hurt the BSU in the shutout, the second in the last three weeks. The Beavers have three goals in the last five losses and the power play, once ranked in No. 4 in the country, has not scored during the streak.

“Right now we’re squeezing the stick a little bit,” BSU head coach Steve Sertich said. “You can sense the frustration of the forwards. We’re working hard and it’s not like we’re lazy. We just have to get to the net and get some rebounds. That’s something we haven’t been doing right now.”

BSU had its chances in the first period when it outshot UMD 10-4, but the game changed when McParland scored and the Beavers were forced to play from behind.

McParland ended an odd-man rush by taking a pass from Audrey Cournoyer at the edge of the net and chipping it over Tomcikova 4:10 into the second period.

“I think we played good in the first period,” Tomcikova said. “But once we got scored on we collapsed, and they took it a step higher and we didn’t respond. We got a little better in the third period, but we didn’t play like we wanted to and like we did in the first.”
